News of Sanjog Tamang joining Trinamul came hours after the party his father had once led agreed to attend an all-party meeting called by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha.
Madan Tamang was hacked to death by alleged Morcha activists when he was preparing to address a meeting on May 21, 2010, in Darjeeling.
Today, when Sanyog, who is in his twenties, was asked about the hill statehood agitation, he said: “Now is not the right time to organise the (Gorkhaland) movement and the primary task should be to take effective steps to curb the suffering of common people.”
Minister Gautam Deb was present at the event to induct Sanyog into the party.
Sanyog’s mother Bharati Tamang, who is the ABGL chief and is fighting a case to indict those involved in the murder, said: “I have no knowledge about Sanyog’s decision to join Trinamul
