Gorkha Utsav 2014 kicked-off in Kalchini – Dooars

Barla said, “The Gorkha Utsav has demonstrated we are not like wild animals. We have been living here for a long time. I am very much happy that with this event, our Gorkha brothers have showed they are far advanced socially and culturally.”

Batting for unity between the Adivasi and Gorkha communities, Barla stressed the Adivasi society needs to learn from its Gorkha counterpart the nuances of cultural and social development.

Hinting at the state government’s covert strategy of playing along communal lines on the pretext of development, the JMM president said, “Development is good, but one that divides communities is not at all welcome.”

On being asked about the JMM’s stance regarding the forthcoming LS polls, Barla said the party is in the process of finalising a strategy and declined to comment any further.

GTA chief executive Bimal Gurung was supposed to attend the event today, but he had not arrived till late in the evening. However, GTA sabhashads Roshan Giri and Dawa Lepcha were present along with Darjeeling GJM leader Dawa Lama. Sources said Gurung will be present here on Sunday, the final day of the Utsav.
